Senior Chief Legalman Robert Nail (Surface Warfare/Aviation Warfare) retired at a ceremony held at Naval Station Great Lakes, Great Lakes, Ill., after 20 years of service, 16 as a legalman, in the United States Navy on December 9, 2016. Nail had served as the senior enlisted leader for Region Legal Service Office Midwest (RLSO MW) since January 2013. Many of those who worked with him on base, including all RLSO MW personnel, were in attendance.   Nail was also joined by members of his family, including his wife and daughter and his long-time friend and mentor, retired Senior Chief Petty Officer Vic Hernandez. Hernandez served as the guest speaker. He spoke of his time as Nail’s leading chief petty officer at Recruit Training Command and the friendship they have shared ever since.  Most of all, he spoke of the integrity, honesty, and commitment to his shipmates that allowed Nail to excel as a leader and make the Navy better in the process. Capt. Greg Bart, commanding officer of RLSO MW, presented Senior Chief Nail with the Meritorious Service Medal for his excellent service in support of RLSO MW.  On behalf of the entire RLSO MW staff, Lt. j.g. Tayler Haggerty, Legalman 2nd Class Joseph Jackson, and Ms. Charlot Davis presented  Nail with a bronzed cover commemorating his 20 years of service in the Navy. Nail lived in Melbourne, Fla. before joining the Navy in December 1996. Following graduation from Recruit Training and Quartermaster “A” School in Great Lakes, Ill.,  Nail served on USS John Rodgers (DD 983) and USS Porter (DDG 78).  He was accepted for a lateral conversion to legalman in December of 2000.  As a legalman, Nail served at Naval Weapons Station Earle, Colts Neck, N.J.; USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20); Naval Air Station Keflavik, Iceland; Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.; USS Nimitz (CVN 68); and RLSO MW. Nail was a model Sailor, shipmate, and leader for all 20 years he served.
