Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Holds Gender and Diversity Forum

Lt. Cmdr. Sarah R. Dorsett assisted Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island host a successful “Mission Readiness: Gender and Diversity in the United States Navy” forum on Ault Field.

Dorsett served as the Installation Staff Judge Advocate and the Branch Head and Legal Assistance attorney at Region Legal Service Office Northwest (RLSO NW) Branch Office Whidbey Island from July 2016 through July 2019.

Capt. Matt Arny, commanding officer of NAS Whidbey Island, opened the forum with welcoming remarks and emphasized the importance of creating a Navy culture that allows commands to benefit from gender and diversity.

During the event, Sailors discussed a number of vital topics ranging from leadership lessons, communication, pregnancy and family planning, communication in a diverse environment, and Fleet and Family programs. Highlights included a presentation by retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Trish Rose, who spoke about communication in a diverse environment. Additionally, a panel comprised of five accomplished officers and enlisted members shared their leadership lessons learned.

Members and summer interns of RLSO NW headquarters and Branch Office Everett had the opportunity to attend the forum. Chief Legalman RaShay T. Stokes participated on a panel on leadership lessons.

Dorsett attended the University of Baltimore School of Law and received a juris doctor, cum laude.  After graduation from law school, she moved abroad to the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and worked as the Assistant Attorney General with the Pohnpei State Office of the Attorney General and assisted in establishing the first United States Veterans Center in the country.  Dorsett accepted a commission with the United States Navy in November 2010 and graduated from Naval Justice School’s Basic Lawyer Course in April of 2011.
