Throughout the year, judge advocates visit law schools, programs and conferences across the country, permitting in-person structured interviews. To the maximum extent practical, structured interviews will be conducted in person.

Funding for applicant travel and reimbursement for any expenses associated with conducting the interview is not authorized. Applicants may elect to travel to a Navy base at no cost to the government.

A video teleconference option will be provided to those applicants where an in-person interview is neither feasible nor practical. The logistics and directions for this type of interview will be provided by the regional recruiting team.

Yes, an applicant’s assessment is not given less weight than an in-person interview. However, in-person interviews provide more connection and opportunity for the applicant through face-to-face time.

No. Only structured interviews conducted on or after 1 August 2026 are valid for current and future applications.  If you have been invited to complete a structured interview, and previously completed one after 1 August 2026, you do not need to complete another interview.

Do your homework about the Navy JAG Corps before the interview and ensure you understand what you would be doing as a Navy judge advocate. Additionally, do your homework on the interviewers. This will allow you to ask targeted questions about the program or the Navy judge advocate experience should time permits after the formal interview.

Yes. As an SP or DA applicant progresses through law school or legal practice, their application may become more competitive through changes in factors such as GPA, work experience, and other relevant qualifications.

Selection standards are set by the Office of the Judge Advocate General every application cycle. Because they are cycle specific, they may change from one cycle to the next. The standards consider factors such as your GPA, LSAT/GRE score, age, JAG internship scores, etc.
