No, you are not eligible for the internship/externship program.
You may be eligible for a full-time position via the Direct Appointment Program.

You will receive a confirmation of receipt within 5 business days of your application. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact the Internship Program Manager at navyjaginternships@us.navy.mil.

Locations vary every summer, and we will do our best to update the internship page with available locations for each summer. Internship positions are typically available at the following locations each summer:

This is up to you. Every location will offer something different, but all internship positions will offer exposure to life in the Navy JAG Corps.

For unfunded internships, consider costs associated with travel, lodging, and transportation.

At this time, all internships and externships are currently unfunded. While our office attempts to acquire funding, we encourage applicants to also seek out scholarships or grants that may be offered by their law schools, bar associations or other public interest-related organizations.

Internships are full-time positions during the summer.
Externships are full or part-time positions during the academic semester.
Summer internships also offer more chances to interact with fellow interns due to typically a larger cohort and more opportunities for professional development events, some of which are planned specifically for interns.

Yes, you may still apply! Make sure you have included your college transcripts and, if you are a 2L, include your 1L grades. If you are a 1L just finishing your first semester of law school, include a note in the “Remarks” section of the internship application that your school won’t release grades until after the deadline.

Applied, Selected

If you would like to remain on the alternate list, please respond to the notification email as instructed. If opportunities become available, you will be notified by email. Typically, all available opportunities are advertised to alternates, regardless of location preferences included on your application. Decisions will be made based on the applicant's file.

The formal internship program begins the first Monday of June.

You must be able to complete eight (8) full weeks to participate in the summer internship program. With command approval, you have the option to work up to 10 weeks.

Interns must be able to complete at least eight (8) full weeks with the Navy JAG Corps so "split summer" arrangements typically are not supported.

Please ensure you are completing all required paperwork, certificate training, and fingerprinting as instructed by email. Additional guidance or tips may be provided in an email.
There are no strict pre-requisite preparation items but we encourage you to maintain an open mind and learning attitude as you go through the unique Navy JAG Corps experience!
